A Jeweller’s Guide to Choosing the Right Engagement Ring Insurance

When you invest in an engagement ring — a piece filled with meaning, emotion, and craftsmanship — protecting it becomes just as important as choosing it. While I don’t usually recommend one specific insurance company (every client’s needs are different), there are a few key things I always encourage couples to look for when selecting the right policy.

Here are some helpful considerations to keep in mind:

1. Comprehensive Coverage: Loss, Theft & Accidental Damage

Look closely at what scenarios are covered. A good policy should protect your ring in all common situations — including accidental damage and loss outside the home. Many standard home insurance policies don’t automatically cover jewellery once it leaves the house, so this detail matters.

2. Worldwide Protection for Peace of Mind

If you or your partner travel often, make sure your ring remains protected wherever life takes you. Worldwide coverage ensures that even on holidays or work trips, your most meaningful piece is still safeguarded.Suitcase Buying Guide: How To Choose Travel Luggage | MYER

3. Agreed Value vs. Market Value

This is one point many clients don’t realise is important. Ideally, choose a policy that insures the agreed valuation amount — the value listed on your official valuation certificate — rather than the insurer’s fluctuating “market estimate.”
This ensures you're compensated accurately if something unexpected happens.

4. Check the Claim Limits Carefully

Every insurer sets a maximum limit on what you can claim for an individual item, and sometimes this amount isn’t enough.
For example, if your $9,000 engagement ring is lost but your policy only covers jewellery up to $1,000 per item, you may only receive that amount.

Always double-check that the policy’s limit comfortably covers the full replacement cost of your ring.

Choosing the right insurance doesn’t have to be overwhelming — a little clarity goes a long way in protecting your most cherished piece. I hope these tips help guide you toward a policy that gives you complete peace of mind.

With love,

Isabella
